Just finished reading "Drum, Doll and the Zombie" last week and I have to say I enjoyed this one as much as any I've yet read. In particular was the villainess Mama Sinistra. I loved the way Bellairs (Strickland) described her way of speaking. She purred her words and I immediately thought of Eartha Kitt playing that role. She would have been terrific in that role!
Mama Sinistra was quick witted, very powerful, and even political! She could have been a James Bond Villain (Live and Let Die?). And the best part of it is that she dies an obscure death! ie....we dont have a body. She just gets pulled underground by the zombie.
Now this might mean the end of Mama, but again, she was powerful in voodoo. It does leave a very good opening for a possible return.
Gee...ya think she'd have a grudge to grind if she did return? Think of what she lost with her defeat?

His (grandon?) Warren Windrow featured in two books - The Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull and The Revenge of the Wizard's Ghost. I believe Zebulon was the patriarch of the Windrow clan, and was in The Revenge of the Wizard's Ghost.
I suspect it was Warren who the previous poster was speaking of, since Warren was a much more sinister character. Zeb was more powerful, to be sure, but Warren was the one whose skull was featured in The Spell...
and who had the connection to the Childermass family.
Those were pretty good books actually, a couple of the creepier ones Bellairs wrote, although the demonic possession part of The Revenge . . .was a bit weak.
My favorite villian?
Hmm . . Stoltzfuss from The Ghost in the Mirror was a pretty decent one . . . as was Witchfinder Pruitt from The Vengeance of the Witchfinder . . .
There are only a couple of villains I disliked . . . the one from The Letter the Witch and the Ring wasn't that great . . . |

| I like Isaac Izard, just for his name alone. Those villians who are totally deranged and intent on destroying the world are usually the best. Especially if they come back from the dead to do it. Now that's a formidable opponent! |
